Patchwork and Quilting Glossary

Quilting has a lot of specialist terms. And I have a lot of explaining to do!

backing

– the fabric on the bottom of a quilt sandwich, the reverse side of a quilt, usually made from a single piece of fabric

biasbatting

– see wadding

bias

– the diagonal direction (45 degrees) on a piece of fabric

binding

– the long strips of fabric that wrap around the edges of a quilt

blockblock

– a square design that can be combined with other blocks to make the top of a quilt

bolt

BOM

– block-of-the-month, a club where a quilt project is split into parts and the fabric and patterns are given to you on a monthly basis

charm

crazy quilting

– a quilting style where irregular shapes of fabric are sewn together without using a pattern. the finished quilt lacks repeating elements

– a hand sewn quilting technique, where the desired shapes are cut from paper and tacked on to pieces of fabric, then the shapes are then stitched together, commonly used for sewing hexagons together

fat eighth

fat quarter

foundation-piecingfoundation piecing/quilting

– a quilting technique where fabric is sewn directly onto a paper pattern

frog stitching

– an alternative term for ripping out stitched seams (rip it, rip it) which sounds nicer than, “I did it wrong”

honey bun

jelly cake – see article

layering

longarm-quiltinglongarm quilting

– a quilting technique where the quilt sandwich is placed in a frame and a longarm sewing machine is used to quilt the layers, without need pins

mystery quilt

– a type of quilt where the quilt pattern is written in parts and only revealed one part at a time so you don’t know what the quilt will look like until you’re finished

– an abbreviation of patchwork and quilting

paper piecing

– see foundation quilting

piecing

– sewing fabric together into blocks

rotary-cutterrotary cutter

– a tool with a circular blade used in quilting to cut fabric

quilting

– the art of sewing together at least two layers of fabric to produce a quilt

quilt sandwich

– placing the wadding between the quilt top and backing

quilt top

– the front of a quilt, the top of a quilt sandwich, often made of patchwork blocks sewn together

sampler-quiltsampler quilt

– a type of quilt where every block is different. a great way to practise quilting different blocks

sashing

– plain fabric strips which are used to separate blocks

selvage

– the edges of a bolt of fabric that do not fray

sleeve

– the fabric sewn on the back of a quilt used to hang up your quilt on a frame or wall

stitch in the ditch

– a quilting technique where you stitch through the layers of a quilt sandwich on the seam lines

turnover

– see article

wadding

– the flat stuffing between a quilt top and backing

– a quilting style where a single piece of fabric is used for the quilt top
